15 min
Every digit in a number has a place value.
Take the number 4,736:
- 4 is in the thousands place: 4,000
- 7 is in the hundreds place: 700
- 3 is in the tens place: 30
- 6 is in the ones place: 6
So 4,736 = 4,000 + 700 + 30 + 6. This is called expanded form.
Reading and writing numbers in words
- 4,736: four thousand, seven hundred and thirty-six
- 9,050: nine thousand and fifty
- 10,000: ten thousand
Ordering numbers
Compare the thousands first, then hundreds, then tens, then ones.
- 5,912 and 5,921: the thousands and hundreds are equal; compare tens: 1 < 2, so 5,912 < 5,921.
Rounding off to the nearest ten
