Lesson 3 of 4 · Grade 10 Chemistry
Acids, bases and salts
18 min
Acids
Produce H⁺ ions in water. pH < 7.
- Strong acids (fully ionised): hydrochloric (HCl), sulphuric (H₂SO₄), nitric (HNO₃).
- Weak acids (partly ionised): ethanoic (vinegar), citric, carbonic.
Reactions:
- Acid + metal → salt + hydrogen: Zn + 2HCl → ZnCl₂ + H₂
- Acid + base → salt + water (neutralisation)
- Acid + carbonate → salt + water + carbon dioxide
