Lesson 1 of 4 ยท Grade 9 Pre-Technical Studies
Orthographic projection
15 min
Orthographic projection shows an object using separate 2D views.
The three main views
- Front elevation: the view looking from the front.
- End (side) elevation: the view from the side.
- Plan: the view from directly above.
First angle projection (used widely in Kenya)
- The plan is drawn below the front elevation.
- The view from the left is placed on the right of the front elevation.
- Symbol: a truncated cone shown in the title block.
Third angle projection
- The plan is drawn above the front elevation, and the view from the left is placed on the left.
Good practice
Use projection lines to keep views aligned, show hidden edges with dashed lines, add centre lines for circular features and dimension in millimetres.
Key points to remember
- Three views: front elevation, end elevation, plan
- First angle: plan below front elevation
- Third angle: plan above front elevation
- Hidden edges as dashed lines
