Lesson 1 of 4 · Grade 8 Pre-Technical Studies
Pictorial drawing
15 min
Pictorial drawings show an object in three dimensions (3D) on paper.
Isometric drawing
- The three main edges (axes) are drawn at 30°, 30° and vertical (90°).
- All measurements along the axes are drawn to true length.
- Draw a box first (the crating method), then cut away the parts.
Oblique drawing
- The front face is drawn true shape (flat, as seen from the front).
- Receding lines are drawn at 45°.
- In cabinet oblique, depth is drawn at half its true length so it looks realistic; in cavalier oblique, it is drawn full length.
Tips
Use a 30°/60° set square for isometric drawing and a 45° set square for oblique drawing. Draw light construction lines first, then line in the outline with a thick, dark line.
Key points to remember
- Isometric axes: 30°, 30° and vertical
- Oblique receding lines at 45°
- Cabinet oblique uses half depth
- Use light construction lines first
