Lesson 4 of 4 · Form 3 Chemistry

Sulphur and sulphuric acid

18 min

Sulphur

Extracted by the Frasch process (superheated water and hot air pumped underground). Allotropes: rhombic and monoclinic sulphur.

Contact process

1. Burn sulphur: S + O₂ → SO₂

2. 2SO₂ + O₂ ⇌ 2SO₃ (catalyst vanadium(V) oxide, about 450°C, 1-2 atm)

3. SO₃ is absorbed in concentrated sulphuric acid to form oleum: SO₃ + H₂SO₄ → H₂S₂O₇
