Lesson 3 of 4 · Form 3 Chemistry
Nitrogen, ammonia and nitric acid
18 min
Nitrogen
About 78% of air. Obtained by fractional distillation of liquid air. Fairly unreactive because of the strong N≡N triple bond.
Haber process (ammonia)
N₂ + 3H₂ ⇌ 2NH₃, ΔH negative (exothermic)
- Catalyst: finely divided iron
- Temperature: about 450-500°C
- Pressure: about 200 atmospheres
- Ammonia is removed by cooling and liquefying; unreacted gases are recycled.
