In algebra we use letters to stand for unknown numbers.
Writing expressions
- A number plus 5: x + 5
- Three times a number: 3y
- A number divided by 2: a/2
Simplifying
Collect like terms (terms with the same letter).
- 3a + 2a = 5a
- 4x + 3y - x = 3x + 3y
- 2m + 5 + 3m - 2 = 5m + 3
