Adjectives and adverbs

15 min

An adjective describes a noun. An adverb describes a verb (how, when or where something happens).

Adjectives

  • a red car, a huge elephant, three books, a kind teacher

Comparing with adjectives

  • Short adjectives add -er and -est: tall, taller, tallest; big, bigger, biggest.
  • Long adjectives use more and most: beautiful, more beautiful, most beautiful.
  • Irregular: good, better, best; bad, worse, worst; many, more, most.

Kamau is taller than Juma. Wanjiru is the tallest in the class.

Adverbs

Many adverbs end in -ly: quickly, slowly, carefully, loudly.

  • She sang loudly. (how)
  • We will travel tomorrow. (when)
  • The children played outside. (where)

Tip: adjective + ly often gives the adverb: quiet, quietly; careful, carefully. But good becomes well: He writes well.
