Lesson 1 of 4 ยท Grade 4 Agriculture and Nutrition

Soil and its types

12 min

Soil is the top layer of the earth where plants grow.

Types of soil

  • Sandy soil: has large particles, drains water fast and does not hold much water.
  • Clay soil: has very small particles, holds a lot of water and becomes sticky when wet.
  • Loam soil: a mixture of sand, clay and humus. It is the best soil for growing crops because it holds enough water and air.

Simple experiment

Put the same amount of sand, clay and loam into three funnels and pour equal water. Sand lets water through fastest; clay lets very little through.

Uses of soil

  • Growing crops
  • Making pots and bricks (clay)
  • Building and making roads (sand)

Key points to remember

  • Loam is best for crops
  • Clay holds the most water
  • Sand drains water fastest
  • Clay is used to make pots
