Lesson 2 of 4 · Form 4 Mathematics
Differentiation
20 min
The rule
If y = axⁿ, then dy/dx = naxⁿ⁻¹.
- The derivative of a constant is 0.
- Differentiate term by term.
Example: y = 3x² + 5x - 7 → dy/dx = 6x + 5.
Gradient at a point
Substitute x into dy/dx. At x = 2: gradient = 6(2) + 5 = 17.
